The Haul – Fantasy Football Draft Edition

First year in a fantasy football keeper league. How will this draft turn out?

TL;DR: Very good fantasy football draft for our team, although it’s kind of hard to screw up a draft with Alvin Kamara as a keeper pick and the 2nd overall pick. Maybe we’ll be the team that will be hit with injuries galore this year.

Download StakeHaul from the Apple App Store and Google Play today!

It’s that time of year again. You put in the research and have what you believe is a foolproof strategy to get the guys you want in your fantasy football draft.

Then, draft day comes. Pick by pick, your strategy gets a wrench or two thrown in it. Do you respond with a panic pick? Do you stay true to your draft board and pick best player available?

Most importantly, is your draft strategy tailored to maximize its potential based on the rules and point system of your league?

Our League Rules

We must say that we’re very happy with the state of our league and the rules behind it. We encourage our followers to talk with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram on all the rules of our league and what you think we should implement to make it even more exciting.  Also, let us know a good punishment for the last place team.

To start, our league is a 12-team, 0.4 PPR, one IDP, one keeper league on ESPN.

We do not randomize our draft slot. The team that wins the league gets to choose 1st in their draft position for the following year. Since we finished 2nd last year, we got to choose 2nd in terms of our draft slot.

Each team is allowed to keep one player that was on their team by the end of the NFL regular season. However, the team loses the pick of the previous round the player was drafted in the prior year.

Example: Davante Adams was drafted in the 4th round last year. The team keeping Adams must forfeit their 3rd round pick for this draft.

If the player kept was drafted in the 1st round last year, they give up their 1st round pick for this draft.

Any player that was drafted in the 11th round or later last year, including undrafted players, must forfeit a 10th round pick.

Since ESPN does not allow manual forfeiture of draft picks, we require each team to draft their IDP player in the round they “lost” their pick due to their keeper selection.

Below are the keepers. Keep in mind that the other teams are named based on their draft position.

Huge shout out to the Reddit Fantasy Football board for initially bringing Kamara to our attention before the season. We highly suggest you mark that as a reference before and during the season to give yourself the best shot at winning your league. You’ll see that our team is already in excellent shape thanks to Kamara as a relative unknown at the beginning of the season to setting the league on fire en route to winning NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Comments

  • Pick 1.02: We were fine with either Elliott or Johnson.
  • Pick 1.03: Never has a rookie been drafted so high in our league. However, we drafted Elliott in the 1st round two years ago, so who knows.
Pick 1.05: Keeper pick for Jordan Howard, RB CHI
  • Pick 1.07: Our 1st round pick at #4 last year. Took us to the championship, but couldn’t play in the final game. We lost by four points.
  • Pick 2.05: Our whole draft group laughed at Royce Freeman picked in this position.
  • Team #5 was on autodraft the entire draft. Needless to say, that team is not in a strong position to start the season.
  • Pick 2.11: No way, Gronk fell to us!? Yo soy fiesta.
  • Pick 3.02: Ultimately we liked Hill’s potential vs. Mike Evans’s consistency. Could come back to bite us.
  • Pick 3.08: Damn it, we were hoping Josh Gordon would fall to the next round!
  • Pick 4.06: Another reach!
  • Pick 4.11: Can’t believe Collins fell to us in this round.
  • Pick 5.02: In hindsight, this may be a reach, but we assumed a run on QBs would occur when Aaron Rodgers was picked at 4.09.
  • Pick 6.06: Jimmy G was the 4th QB taken. Maybe this manager knows something we don’t.
  • Pick 7.02: The definition of a boom/bust pick.
  • Pick 7.04: Jags are the first DEF off the board. Seems a tad early.
  • Pick 7.12: Cam fell to here!?
  • Pick 8.07: Pick received from Team #7 trading Joe Mixon, RB CIN as a keeper to Team #5 prior to the draft. As a result, Team #7 forfeited their final round pick.

Our Team

Final Thoughts

We seemed to have grabbed quality players at every turn of this draft. It’s rare indeed to be better than the average team at the three core positions (quarterback, running back and receiver), but we think this team is. Tight end, of course, is also a big plus for this team. We think we have positioned our team well enough to make the playoffs. However, that’s why we play the game.

Stay tuned for season long updates!
